1. Forehead guessing (passengers only)
One passenger holds the phone up, the others describe the word, they guess. The definitive car game. One person thinks of something; everyone else gets twenty yes/no questions to find it. The driver can play without taking their eyes off the road, which is why it has survived a hundred years of car journeys.
3. The alphabet game
Find something starting with A outside the window, then B, then C, all the way to Z. Signs count; number plates are usually banned to make it harder. Works solo or as a race.
4. I spy (for younger children)
Only fair if the object stays in view — so use colours and shapes inside the car rather than things flashing past at 70mph.
5. Categories
Name a category, go round the car naming one item each, three seconds to answer, no repeats. Cereal brands, football teams, things in a fridge. Endless and needs zero preparation.
6. Song battles / name that tune
Play five seconds of a track and race to name it. Alternatively: someone hums, everyone else guesses. Both work perfectly in a car because they are entirely audio.
7. Story chain
One sentence each, building a single story around the car. It goes off the rails within four sentences, which is the entire point. Excellent with children who are too young for rules.
8. Would you rather
Two bad options, everyone argues. Costs nothing, fills half an hour and works with any age if you choose the questions sensibly.
9. The license plate game
Collect plates from as many different regions or states as you can. Slow-burning and quiet — good for the hour after lunch when everyone has gone flat.
10. Fortunately, unfortunately
Alternate sentences: "Fortunately, we found a petrol station." "Unfortunately, it was closed." Simple, cumulative and reliably funny.
Car game rules that actually help
Keep any phone game to the passengers. Load anything you need before you set off, so a dead zone does not end the game. Switch games every twenty minutes rather than playing one to death. And if someone is prone to car sickness, stick to audio-only games — looking down at a screen makes it worse.
